The First 100 Days: Presidential News Conference

CNN marked President Barack Obama's 100th day in office with prime-time coverage that recalled last year's primary and general election nights, right down to John King's magic wall. The network compiled a national report card of Obama's performance, using opinion polls and a series of viewer surveys.

The big night was April 29, pre-empting regular programming from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EDT.

Most of the anchors and commentators who were CNN regulars on political nights last year appeared.

The 100-day marker is a journalistic contrivance often used to evaluate new administrations. CNN gave extra importance to this one because of the two wars and economic meltdown.

TIME's Karen Tumulty was here live, bringing you up-to-the-minute coverage on this event.

[...] some time after 7 p.m. Eastern, I'll be liveblogging the President's 100 Days news conference. Here's the link where you can find me. And I'll be testing out some new software, so wish me [...]

I am hoping for some hope and change, followed by some tough talk about responsibility. Then I want to hear Newt Gingrich talk about restraint afterwords when Hannity or somebody interviews him.

It sure does seem like just yesterday Obama was elected, but at the same time it really seems like so much has happened within the short time - from budget plans to pirates to swine flu! They actually did a really cool segment on the TODAY Show this morning that visually takes you through the last 100 days of Obama's presidency. You can check out the clip on the TODAY Show iPhone app I think: itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=309546027&mt=8

We are at 100 days and we are just getting a HHS sec confirmed. I actually think the midterm elections are a good way of judging how the term is going. But it's less immediate gratification.
    .
Obama is doing fine. But many of these policy decisions can't really be judged until they get implemented. They could be wildly successful, or dissapointing. How can we judge the stimulus for example? Or Iraq policy?

I am hoping that Newt Gingrich wasn't sitting athwart somebody's chest and doing terrible things during the shoot.

Only 5 people on the planet will get that reference btw.

Obama's doing fine with mainstream Americans. Most probably won't even care to watch. They're confident in his ability already...

Torture is breaking int'l law. Sadly, Obama is dancing around this question.

  • 8

Wait, why would he call on Michael Scherer?

  • 9

Cliff: Why? Because of MS's deep knowledge of...umm....
    .
I'm surprised the Af/Pak Q came before Iraq. A successful Iraq withdrawal will free up many of our troops for home and Af/Pak.

RT from K-Tum: Arlen welcomed the Dems as liberators!
    .
Shorter Obama: Just say "No" to the Party of "No".

Obama declares that Specter has been liberated.
    .
Were we greeted with flowers in the streets or shall we expect an insurgency?

kbang - In all fairness, MS is pretty good at typing and dog trivia.

  • 13

haha, this is great KT another reason for a live blog, but somehow I feel lost without the staging critic of JP from TunedIn land, I mean, he's not even moving from the podium! ;)

Re: Specter. I recall how disappointed the Swamp was when Obama played nice with Lieberman. It appears Obama was playing the long game.

Chuck Todd has a good question
    .
Now there's a phrase with no meaning.

    surprised, mystified, enchanted, ...wha??

    From Wikipedia:
    .
The Freedom of Choice Act (H.R. 1964/S. 1173) was a bill in the 110th United States Congress which "declares that it is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child; terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability; or terminate a pregnancy after viability when necessary to protect her life or her health.

What is your favorite color, and why, and what are other good colors and when did you discover this and....ahahahahahhaah

Obama says he can't turn on a switch and make Congress fall in line.
    .
If only Obama could turn a switch that's wired to Reid's jewels, the Senate might get with the program.

  • 20

Are those real candles in the background? I'm guessing fake...but think of how green it'd be if they we candles!

  • 21

OT: Did anyone read George Will in Newsweek? Obama is overexposed. Apparently, "Silent Cal" had it right. Harumph!

  • 22

Am I the only one finding this new software really difficult?

  • 23

it's Michael! so that's what he sounds like....

  • 24

MS got it - but the byline was Michael Shear of the WaPo!! Oh, the horror...
    .
(And the follow up shot of Michael looks like he wet himself.)

  • 25
